The integral part of a woman Kabardian dress was a belt. There were a lot of types, made of or with silver. The product of Northern Caucasus craftsmen was very popular and widespread all over the Caucasus and far beyond. Northern Caucasus silver and goldsmiths made not only luxsirious weapon but also belts, earrings, necklaces and bracelets.
This belt made of galloon ribbon on a silk base, decorated with massive gild silver two-part buckle with pinned lock. Craftsmen of the decorative metal-work worked with old technologies in combined technique: chasing with engraving, niello with granulation. Such a belt was very expensive and was a compulsory part of festival or wedding dress. Above decorative function it was also an amulet and a good will symbol.
