Casket. Russians. Northern Russia. Late 17th cen.
Beautiful bone caskets with carved décor were known in Russia from the days of yore, found mostly in royal palaces and the homes of boyar and rich merchants up to the early 18th cen. Caskets of this kind were used as containers for valuables, money, jewellery and documents. Similar boxes belonging to peasants had much the same designs, but their materials and decorations were less expensive. Being of the great value to their owners, peasants’ caskets were treasured heirlooms handed down from one generation to another.
